Jasper Jasper came to the shelter several years ago, along with his cage mates Sebastian and Dora. They had belonged to a college student who discovered that 3 ferrets were too much to care for during finals. The 3 found a "forever" home last year, but were recently returned to the shelter when tragedy struck the adopting family. These 3 had been resilient through all the bouncing between homes, but are now beginning to show their age and will likely remain at the shelter for the rest of their lives.

The Nirvana Ridge Ferret Rescue has grown significantly over the past year. Our main shelter in Brandy Station, VA has reached our facility limit of 70 ferrets. Our Richmond foster home is at 30 ferrets. We have expanded with foster homes in Virginia Beach, Charlottesville area and down in North Carolina. That’s about a 350-mile radius, and well over 100 ferrets! Plans are in work for the construction of a much needed new shelter for expansion – details are forthcoming.

Caring for all these ferrets is a full-time job for several of us. Just keeping everyone fed and watered, cleaned, and rotating ferrets in/out of their cages is a monumental task that we perform each and every day. Then there’s medicines to be administered (as necessary), toe nails to be cut, ears to be cleaned, bathing due to incontinence, transports to the vet, and a ton of laundry to be done. Volunteers are always welcomed and appreciated!
